WORKSHOP

Research workshops II by LeMSIC (SCORE)

A series of lectures, readings, problem-based learning activities, and assignments will be held. The main goal of these workshops is to enable students interested in research to develop the skills that allow them to read, write and publish a paper.

Goals: This series of lectures, readings, problem-based learning activities, and assignments should enable the student to:

1. Understand the nature of scientific inquiry and the conduct of ethical research.
2. Recognize the advantages and limitations of various sources of information when conducting a literature review and developing research questions that can be tested empirically.
3. Determine appropriate research designs and methods of collecting, managing, and analyzing data.
4. Critically evaluate all sections of peer-reviewed journal articles.
5. Understand the steps involved in developing scientifically sound and ethical research proposals and in searching for sources of funding.

Objectives: Upon completing the workshops, students should know:

1. How research skills training can enhance professional development and how evidence-based research can help to advance science.
2. The major characteristics of the Scientific Method.
3. The steps involved in the research process (from research idea to publication).
4. How to conduct a thorough literature search and develop a Literature Review Matrix.
5. How to transform a research idea into a research question and testable hypothesis.
6. How to select the most appropriate research design for testing a given hypothesis.
7. How to determine the most appropriate summary statistics and parametric/nonparametric tests.
