Viral Conjunctivitis

Do you have eye redness, discharge, burning, itching, light sensitivity, irritation, soreness, excessive tearing, swollen eyes and blurred vision? Then you may have Viral Conjunctivitis. We encourage you to contact the University Health Services.

What is Viral Conjunctivitis?

Viral Conjunctivitis is a contagious disease and it has been noticed as frequently occurring among our community members. It is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the mucous membrane that lines the eyelids and covers the white of the eyeball. It can occur in one eye or both. It is a self limiting illness, but it is highly infectious and contagious and spreads rapidly in the community.

To prevent the spread of disease:

Avoid casual contact, sharing towels or pillow cases, facial contact, sharing of cosmetics, kissing or shaking contaminated hands.

Precautions you should take when you have conjunctivitis:
Hygiene measures: Always wash hands with soap and water before and after touching the eyes.
- Avoid any facial contact with others
- Don't let others use your personal articles such as towels, pillows, or cosmetics.
- You should not wear contact lenses (if applicable)
People who provide healthcare, food services, or education should seek medical advice before reporting back to work

Basic instructions to relieve symptoms:
- Use a cool wet cloth 3-4 times a day.
- Apply artificial tears.
